High fibre is often described as one of the most important parts of a Mediterranean tortoise’s diet.
But why?
Most care guides simply tell you to feed weeds or recommend a high-fibre diet without explaining what fibre actually does inside your tortoise’s body. Understanding that “why” changes everything.
For millions of years, Mediterranean tortoises have evolved to survive on a diet made up primarily of wild weeds, herbaceous plants, edible flowers and seasonal vegetation. These plants are naturally high in fibre, relatively low in calories and protein, and rich in many of the nutrients tortoises need to thrive. Their bodies didn’t simply adapt to tolerate this diet. They evolved to depend on it.
High fibre doesn’t just fill a tortoise’s stomach.
It powers the digestive system, feeds billions of beneficial microorganisms living inside the gut, helps regulate growth, supports healthy shell and bone development, contributes to kidney health and encourages the natural browsing behaviour seen in wild tortoises.
The Tortoise Trust has consistently highlighted that one of the biggest differences between wild and captive Mediterranean tortoises is the amount of dietary fibre they consume. Wild tortoises naturally eat a diverse range of fibrous plants every day, whereas many captive diets rely too heavily on soft supermarket foods that simply do not resemble their natural diet.

What Is Dietary Fibre?
When most people hear the word fibre, they think about digestion. For Mediterranean tortoises, fibre is much more than that.
Fibre is the tough structural material that forms the cell walls of plants. It gives weeds, leaves and stems their strength and makes them far more difficult to digest than soft vegetables or fruit.
To humans, this might sound like a disadvantage. To a Mediterranean tortoise, it is exactly what evolution designed their digestive system to handle. Unlike many mammals, tortoises cannot simply break down these tough plant fibres using their own digestive enzymes. Instead, they rely on one of the most remarkable partnerships in nature.
A Tortoise Never Eats Alone
Every Mediterranean tortoise carries an invisible army inside its digestive system. Millions of beneficial bacteria, fungi and other microscopic organisms live within the large intestine. Together they form what scientists call the gut microbiome.
These microorganisms perform a job that the tortoise cannot do alone. When fibrous plant material reaches the hindgut, these microbes ferment it.
During fermentation, they break down complex plant fibres into substances that the tortoise can absorb and use.
This process releases valuable nutrients and produces short-chain fatty acids, which help nourish the cells lining the intestine and support overall gut health.

This relationship has evolved over millions of years.
Without enough fibre, the entire system begins to change.
Fibre Feeds the Gut Before It Feeds the Tortoise
Perhaps the biggest misconception in tortoise nutrition is that fibre exists simply to fill the stomach.
The opposite is true. The first mouths that fibre feeds are not the tortoise’s. They belong to the billions of beneficial microorganisms living inside the gut. When these microbes receive the right type of food, they flourish.

Digestion Was Designed To Be Slow
Humans often associate slow digestion with constipation or poor health. Mediterranean tortoises evolved in exactly the opposite direction. Their digestive system is designed to work slowly. Wild tortoises spend many hours walking, browsing and eating relatively small amounts of fibrous vegetation throughout the day. Because these foods are coarse and difficult to digest, they remain within the digestive system for longer. This gives the gut microbes time to ferment the plant material thoroughly and allows nutrients to be released gradually.
Soft supermarket foods behave very differently. They are easier to digest, require far less fermentation and do not stimulate the digestive system in the same natural way. The result is a diet that may fill the stomach but does not recreate the digestive conditions Mediterranean tortoises evolved to depend upon.
How Fibre Supports Healthy Shell Growth
Many people believe that building a healthy shell is simply a matter of feeding enough calcium.
In reality, the process begins much earlier.
A tortoise’s shell is living bone, built from nutrients extracted from its food. Before calcium can be incorporated into the shell, nutrients first have to be released from food during digestion, absorbed through the intestine and transported around the body.
This is where fibre plays such an important role. Fibre doesn’t build the shell directly. Instead, it helps maintain the healthy gut environment that Mediterranean tortoises have evolved to depend on. A healthy gut microbiome supports efficient digestion and helps the body make the best use of the nutrients in its natural diet.
In other words, the foundation of a healthy shell starts long before new shell is formed.
A healthy shell is built from the inside out.
